Meet Soorya.
Soorya’s day job is Linux administration at Wipro, looking after production servers. At OpenDott he writes the backend code and then sets up and runs the servers it lives on.
He and Danyal have been friends since childhood. Together they built Relay, the HR and payroll software and the jewellery POS, and Soorya still looks after all three: the code, the databases, the servers, and the late-night fixes when something breaks.
A few highlights.
Systems he runs in production: a cable billing app, an HR and payroll platform used by several companies, and a jewellery POS.
Relay, the cable operator billing app, is on Google Play. The app and the website share one backend.
Languages in Relay, so collectors can use it in the language they read best.
Database updates shipped to Relay while it was live, without losing anyone’s data.
Where he’s worked.
Co-founder
Builds the backends and runs the servers.
Linux Administrator
Looks after production servers: patching, uptime and incidents.
Running three systems
All three are in daily use.
First products shipped
Both went live on code and servers he set up.
What he’s careful about.
He’s been on call
He’s the one who gets the call at 2am when a server goes down, so he builds things that are easy to fix and easy to check.
Code and servers
He writes the backend and sets up the server himself, so nothing gets lost between two people.
Careful with live data
Real customers and real payments sit behind his database changes, so every change is tested and checked on the server afterwards.
Easy to hand over
Deploys are written down and the code is easy to follow, so the software doesn’t depend on one person.
Skills & stack.
